Metropolitan Museum of Art, "American Tree of Life " Square Scarf / Wrap, 44" Square
This spirited scarf celebrates an extraordinary American quilt (ca. 1875) in The Met Collection, which was originally made by Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil (American, born Germany, 1828–1904). It bears the Tree of Life pattern, a popular bedcover design since the seventeenth century.

About this Design by Ernestine Zaumseil
In Zaumseil's quilt, the foliage is more realistic than in the Indian versions. She seems to have traced actual leaves and vines for her appliquéd designs; the central "tree" is taken from grapevine leaves, and maple and beech leaves can also be clearly identified.
