About the Charles Demuth (American, 1883–1935)
Demuth's use of watery pigment may have been influenced by his contemporary, John Marin (American, 1870–1953), whose work he could have seen in Paris and New York exhibitions. Demuth was friends with the esteemed painter Georgia O'Keeffe (American, 1887–1986), who bequeathed this meditative composition to The Met as part of the Alfred Stieglitz collection in honor of her husband.
