About The Lampit in The Met collection
Lampits or ceremonial mats were designed for spiritual leaders who presided over important ritual gatherings, woven from finely split cane fibers and adorned with burnt patterns made with a heated stylus. The lampit in The Met collection features crescent moons amid birds in flight to suggest the timeless relationship between Indonesia's elite rulers and the universe's cosmic order.
